Larry's Biography
Larry is native to Charlottesville, Virginia, and he recalls that "there was always music in the house" when he was a child. Larry started taking piano lessons at age 8, began playing guitar at age 10, and had started his first rock ‘n’ roll band by the time he was 12 years old. In his youth, Larry played keys and guitar in several bands and then got back to classical music making after high school. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in piano and harpsichord, and continued to the University of Miami for a master’s in piano. From there, Larry returned to Charlottesville, where he sang with the Virginia Consort and played solo concerts on harpsichord, before heading to the University of South Carolina, where he earned a doctorate in composition with a minor in orchestral conducting. Some graduate school highlights include writing and conducting an opera, a Latin Mass, and various other choral, vocal, and instrumental music. Upon returning to Tampa, Larry founded Florida Pro Musica, a professional early music ensemble, for which he was the Music Director. After an exciting 20 years of Renaissance polyphony, Baroque chamber music, and Gregorian chant, Larry retired from that ensemble and returned to Virginia. Since coming home, he has been playing keys, guitar, and bass with several rock groups around Charlottesville and the Shenandoah Valley. Larry has taught piano for decades from beginners in one-on-one private studios all the way up to the university level with a flare for classical, pop/rock, improvisation, and sight reading. He also specializes in teaching music theory: harmony, counterpoint, orchestration, form & analysis.
